We are SIPRO, participating in the experimental BBS beton-governmental
Organizations in Mexico. In our BBS, we recently opened a conference on the
500 years, focussing on both church- and na people-issues. We intent to
exchange materials between the two conferences.

I am Charles Scheiner, a local/national (US)/international activist with
the Westchester Peoples Action Coalition (WESPAC), Mobilization for Survival
and War Resisters League, and the Nuclear-Free and Independent Pacific
movement. All three are grappling with how to address the 500th
anniversary, and have already begun to some extent. In the NFIP movement,
more recently invaded (“discovered”) countries are still under indigenous
control with indigenous majorities, and are resisting political, economic,
and cultural colonialism from the US and European powers. Check out
reg.pacific for more information.

I look forward to learning from and using this conference to see how
primarily non-indigenous people can relate to the Quincentenary, to learn
from crimes of the past and prevent their continual repetition.

My name is Pablo Stanfield; i am a consultant in human systems
and intercultural conflict resolution working with a small
group called Inter/Act Institute for Intercultural Understanding.
I am a Quaker and like Quakers from the first colonies in this
continent have been appalled at how other Europeans treat the
native peoples. I am also bicultural and bilingual Latino and
Anglo. I love Spain and Latin America and am distressed at how
the Italians are stealing Colo’n (a perfectly good catala’n
surname and family) and the Hispanic heritage while everyone
celebrates Anglo-America and ignores the Conquista and Latin
America. The peoples of the rest of America also are trying to
deal with these 500 years of mestizo, criollo, and indigena
together. The AFSC office in Seattle is quite concerned to make
the next year a valid celebration of all Americans and re-evalu-
ation of the impact of colonization on this continent. I will
serve as a liaison with them and pn. if you’d like.

My name is Loretta Williams. I’m an activist
sociologist who has developed materials for the National
Council of Churches on the Quincentennial. (Among them:
“Responding Faithfully” – a resource packet, $8. from NCCC
Prophetic Justice Unit, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY
10115.) I’m also active in a Greater Boston counter-Quinc.
coalition, AQUA: Alternative Quincentenary Understandings
and Actions. (If you’re in Boston, join us. Call (617)
523-0555 for next meeting date.)

I will enter elsewhere a letter to PBS which we (NCCC
Racial Justice Working Group) are sending about the Columbus
and the Age of Discovery series. I urge others to do likewise,
and to pressure local PBS stations to give equal time for
community responses. The series, as biased as it is, can be
a good organizing vehicle.

Very glad to see this new conf. In terms of goals the most I hope for
is the exchange of info about activities around America (the hemisphere).

I will post info about a conference scheduled for Oct 7, 92 in Washington
DC entitled “500 Years of Resistance: The Columbus Legacy and the African”
at Howard University. It will focus on the African American presence.

In Solidarity,

David Sangurima
Washington, DC

To introduce myself:

I work with a weekly newspaper, the Alternative Index, which promotes
the contributions of indigenes and others to the process of social growth
and understanding among peoples.

I am also part of the local Unitarian-Univeralist Service Committee, which
is interested in getting involved with a Quincentennial project.

I forsee this subject focalizing a lot of “political organizing and
conscientizing!” – Please add me to the mailing list.
